No Room At The Inn

Just a quick up-date...Still no room at the Inn...4 weeks since he requested a bed at Detox. Today I made him call and put it on speaker phone so I could hear the conversation ( Plus I was beginning to wonder if he really did ) Conversation kinda went like this.
Son: Yes just calling again to see if you can tell me when I can get a bed in detox,I have been waiting a month and everyday you tell me it will be this week.
Intake person: What's your name sweetie?
Son: Name given
Intake person: Yes we have your referral,we have noted you called from Aug 22 -Sept 20 everyday.Sorry we had some emergency referral's that we had to take which affected those on the waiting list
Son: If I do not get in soon I am going to do something stupid,This is ridiculous !!
Intake Person: If you feel suicidal please go to Emergency,You will get in soon Sweetie. Click( while Mamma was screaming in the background "hand me that phone!!")

So another e-mail sent off to our Minister of Health ( who never acknowledges our letters). Hopefully week 5 will be his lucky week...Shame Shame Shame!!!!

  1. It really is just a crying shame when they cannot get in when they are ready to go. It is the same story here in New York, unless, of course, you have thousands of dollars to shell out for a private rehab. My son did check himself in to a rehab last June but only was able to stay 3 days as my insurance rejected the in-patient stay. They rejected him again even after he overdosed. He was finally able to go inpatient because the court mandated it, there was only a two week wait. I hear this all of the time from an organization that tries to place addicts, no beds............ It's tough on parents that don't have the financial means for private pay.

I will be praying a bed opens up soon for your son.

  2. Thanks so much Erin for your comment. It is a shame, especially when everyone tells us that this is the crucial time in an addicts life, get them when they " want the help".When the time comes for the bed opening, then the problem is we have to find them!!

  3. The fact he cannot get a bed after a month infuriates me. We have so many mom and pop recovery groups making money hand over fist ... yet this travesty exists. I agree w/ Erin that it is a "crying shame" . It's a system that needs vast improvement.

  4. I am so glad that you were put on speaker so it could put to rest any doubts because, of course, after all this time one would begin to wonder. This is completely unacceptable. I cannot wait to hear Minister Currie's action plan. Two young men committed suicide in 4 days last week. Something needs to be done!

  5. I've said this before ...sadly ... it will take a family member of Minister Currie or someone close to him,be in this position before something will be done. I wonder what the cost of lives are worth these days to the Govt.I just pray those folks that it's too late for ...that their death was not in vain ... that somehow ... their "voice" will be heard. It's up to us ... the living ...the parents, the friends ... to become even louder. Prayers for your Son Mama, keep the Faith and you know where to find me :D Love & Light my friend

  6. Don't you just feel like packing his bag, driving him there and sitting there until they make room. He is ready, he wants and needs to go, he is asking for help , somebody please wake up and help this young man who is willing to make a step in his recovery. I feel for you and your family, maybe today will be the day. I will say a prayer for you and your family.

    1. There's been many a time that I felt like calling my friends to come and have a "sit in" at Mt. Herbert and refuse to leave until my child got a bed. It is just so frustrating when they are ready and have to wait so long!
